"Young Italy" by Giuseppe Mazzini

Young Italy was a society dedicated the unification of Italy. The following are beliefs found in the oath of Young Italy:
  • Young Italy is a brotherhood that believes in progress and that Italy is destined to be one nation.
  • In order to achieve this goal we must rely on a unity of effort so that we may have a nation of free men and equals
  • Young Italy is Republican because only a Republic insures a free and equal community
  • Education and insurrection are the means by which a Republic will be formed. Insurrection must be conducted by means of national education
  • The best way of insurrection is by guerrila bands which brings together the people into a warlike deed
  • God has given us this land which we must reclaim from domestic and foreign tyrannys. God has given us the power.
  • We will not stop until we achieve out goals

  1. The tragedy of the nationalist movement which swept through Europe (not only Italy) in the mid- nineteenth century is that, whilst it forged bigger units of power, it never superseded tribalism but itself became mega-tribal, culminating in two world wars. When the UN was founded after WW2 it failed to provide a structure to take us out of tribalism into a truly global climate of thought - hence the cold war and our present uneasy muddle.
