Hermann Ahlwardt: “The Semitic Versus the Teutonic Race”

  • Hermann Ahlwardt (1846-1914) – Anti semitic member of the Reichstag

  • This excerpt is a speech of his to the German chamber, trying to close Germany's borders to Jewish immigrants in 1895

  • Claims that they don't hate the Jews because of their religion, they the them because they are an entirely different race of people with entirely different character traits

  • The Jews constantly prove how they are an entirely different race of people, and it will nearly impossible to coexist with them

  • The Teutons are much more firmly rooted in a culture of labor than the Jews are

  • Putting the Jews on the same level as other people is a grave mistake

  • Apparently all great ideas come from the Germans and not from the Jews

  • German and Jewish art express completely different things

  • In the end, Ahlwardt didn't want all Jews killed. He just wanted “a clear and reasonable separation of jews from the Germans”
