- Encyclopedia- aim to collect all knowledge and keep it for posterity
- Fanaticism- superstition put into practice, causes ridiculous and cruel actions to be taken with a sort of joy
- Government- its purpose should be the good of the people
- if met with resistance the governors will use destruction as a tool
- power cannot be arbitrary, must be used according to laws
- History- learn from mistakes of the past
- Humanity- "benevolent feeling for all men"
- Intolerance- stirs up men, arms nations, and causes much spilling of blood
- Peace- if reason governed men there would be far less war
- Political authority- there is no natural right of men to control others
- Press- freedom of the press is necessary to allow for liberty within a state

Denis Diderot, Encyclopedia
Thesis: Diderot's Encylcopedia was a testament to Enlightenment thought with which Diderot hoped to "produce in time a revolution of the minds of man".
