Albert Schweitzer - A Concerned Doctor in Tropical Africa-

Schweitzer contradicts the popular view of African natives as rough, primitive peoples, instead asserting that they are morally equal or greater than Europeans and that they deserve respect rather than domination.

  • Africans are just as human as Europeans, and possess human dignity
  • The job of Europeans is to protect Africans, and their obedience should be attained by demonstrating that the Europeans are morally just
  • Contrary to the popular view, the Africans have deep, even deeper understanding concerning life, the universe, and other philosophical matters
  • Despite these virtues, the Africans have been brutally mistreated by other races, and the duty of the Europeans is to atone for this injustice by helping Africa
  • Africa should be aided by establishing a paternal government over the natives, as a free government would allow other African countries to enslave the natives
