Thesis: John Atkinson Hobson stresses that economic reasons were the driving force behind imperialism but that imperialism has negative consequences in terms of diplomacy between major European countries.

-Imperialism results in violence and often escalates into war
-cites examples India, West Africa, Sudan, Uganda, Rhodesia (see image below)Rhodesian_Ridgeback.jpg<---Rhodesian Ridgeback, brutally colonized by the British

-Pax Brittanica doesn't really exist, just a falsehood used to justify imperialism
-Imperialism drains resources from country's militaries
-Diplomacy becomes very shaky because there are multiple points of dissent between the European powers
-Imperialism is furthered by private business interests, not by the desires of the populaces of countries
-Justification for imperialism is weak
-notion of a white man's burden is not a true justification
-for lower classes sensationalism and hero worship is appealed to

-Westerners are parasites on the host countries
-governed badly by representatives of Europeans
-"This failure to justify by results the forcible rule over alien peoples is attributable to no special defect of the British or other European nations. It is inherent in the nature of such domination. . ."
