Chamberlain: "White Man's Burden"

Chamberlain: “White Man’s Burden”

Thesis: Since Chamberlain believed that the welfare of the British depended upon the preservation and extension of the empire, he found it necessary for the British to develop more trading routes and extend British law onto those backward peoples of Africa and Asia.

· The empire is commerce

o No nation ever achieved greatness without the help of commerce or survived without trade

o In order to create more employment, there must be more demands in economics

· He approves of the occupation of Egypt; thus, he urges govt to extend their influence and control on African continent, which is now opened to commerce and trading.

o As a result, he believes that their navy should be strengthened to better obtain imperial desires

· In order to rule over these places, British must show that it can create and sustain the happiness and prosperity of the people there

o Thus, by carrying out this work, they are fulfilling their national mission; however, perfect success will not always be achieved

o However, they must not completely destroy the existing culture

· The honor of this task is great, but the work involved is also great
