John Atkinson Hobson - An Early Critique of Imperialism

Hobson conveys his disapproval of the New Imperialist system, citing the injustices that the system introduces.

  • Imperialism has brought about greatly increased violence – pax Britannica is a myth
  • Conflict over colonies has increased tensions between countries and militarism
  • Imperialism is inherently unjust, as businessmen and their private interests control the public’s money and soldiers
  • Anthropological and economic arguments for imperialism are weak and insubstantial, and the root cause of colonization is an instinct to dominate weaker peoples
  • Efforts to “westernize” and bring civilization to foreign peoples are also weak and have no promise
  • Imperialism contradicts all Enlightenment principles with respect to government, as the peoples governed are subdued and used only for labor, with no role in government
