"That Fabulous Day" Doregeles

“That Fabulous Day” Doregeles

Thesis: As a French writer, regarding the war “as a sacred moment that held the promise of adventure”, during the outbreak of WWI, Doregeles comments on the mood in Paris at the beginning of the war.

  • Read a message on the Rue Drouot: First day of mobilization for the war will be Sunday, Aug. 2
  • With patriotism, most of everyone sang the “Marseillaise” and shouted with joy
  • Many different kinds of people were allowed to join the military
  • “Aux armes, citoyens” – “To arm, citizens!”
  • He say the cavalry, the footsoldiers in the uniforms, the women throwing flowers and kisses to these men, guns being loaded, and trooped being loaded into transport vans
  • Young and old blazed with excitement
  • Although socialists’ old dreams of peace were ruined, they still burned with patriotic zeal
  • Thousands of men then ran to the recruiting offices to join
  • Duty meant something; men wanted to defend their country
  • However, there is the thought deep down that those who enlisted were probably going to be killed by the enemy who in about 50 years might not be their enemy anymore
  • He questions ppls’ enthusiasm, for most them are going to get killed
