Baron von Giesl "AUSTRIAN RESPONSE TO THE ASSASSINATION"

Thesis: Baron von Giesl in a memorandum expressed the need for an Austrian response to the growing Serbian nationalism, which had been recently strengthened ten-fold by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.

I. Assassination has built the idea that the Serbians will free themselves from the Hapsburg States

II. Austria Hungary now appears powerless to the Serbians

a. “ripe for destruction”

b. would easily fall to the “Great-Servian Empire”

III. Mainstream media insult the Hapsburgs without reprise in Serbia

IV. All mainstream political parties run against the Hapsburg power

V. Monarchy is believed to be powerless

VI. Half measures would be the greatest blow to Austria-Hungary’s empire

a. Presentation of demands followed by discussion and ending with compromise
