Marta Appel - Memoirs of a German Jewish Woman

Appel describes the abhorrence of Jews in the general population under the Nazis.
  • At first, during the first boycott of Jewish businesses, most Germans were opposed and even comforted the Jews or clashed with guards...but this sentiment didn't last more than a few months
  • Old friends of Appel began to shun her for being Jewish, until they barely knew each other
  • Many of Appel's friends asserted that they still appreciated her, but Appel realized the truth when she was shunned from the book club she had been a part of for years
  • Appel's children suffered the same, as they were excluded from field trips and activities, shunned by their fellow students, and were insulted daily by the teachers
Those are some 1st class jerks. Yikes!
