Helvetius

Rob Edwards

Helvetius, “Essays on the Mind” and “A Treatise on Man”

Thesis: In “Essays on the Mind” and “A Treatise on Man,” Helvetius strongly emphasized the importance of the environment in shaping the human mind, in that all humans made be made into great people with the proper environment as children.

  • All inequalities among men are as a result of the different environments in which they were raised

  • “The art of education consists in placing you men in such as concurrence of circumstances as are proper to unfold the buds of genius and virtue”

  • The opinion that genius and virtue is something you are born with is the biggest obstacle to the future progress of education

  • The problem is that a large number of people believe that “Understanding is the effect of a certain sort of interior temperament and organization”

  • The way to improve societies and entire countries is to improve education
