Perry, Locke, “Essay Concerning Human Understanding” and “Thoughts on Education”

Because they are blank slates when they are born humans are merely the results of their environments as perceived by their senses and reflected on by their minds. In order to produce productive and upright individuals the best environment for their youth is one of education.


  1. Mind a blank slate (Tabula Rosa) shaped by experience only two avenues by which we are influenced
    1. Sensation - perceptions are ideas
      1. colors
      2. heat
      3. cold
      4. soft
      5. hard
      6. bitter
      7. sweet
    2. Reflection
      1. perception
      2. thinking
      3. doubting
      4. believing
      5. reasoning
      6. knowing
      7. willing
  2. Education
    1. the fact that children are blank slates increases the importance of a strong education
    2. discipline in educating children
      1. not punishments and rewards
      2. best discipline is esteem and disgrace because theses will be his guides for the rest of his life
    3. No reasoning with children but teach by example
